I’m in my 20s and I’ve reached a point where basically all my clothes from my teens and college years are dissolving. I’ve also entered a new career where my looks and presentation are very important.
Basically I need a whole new wardrobe of clothes for daily wear. I’m not looking for business attire, think more along the likes of nice “going out” clothes.
I’m pretty new to thinking and focusing on my clothing tbh. What are some brands I should look into? I want clothes that look good and will last, but my budget isn’t huge. What are some brands that really outperform on quality given their price?
The true bang for your buck comes from the term “cost per wear” if you spend $40 on a pair of jeans and wear them 10 times before they fall apart you spent $4 per wear. If you spend $100 on jeans and wear them 3 days a week for a year (so 156 days) your cost just went down to $1.56 per wear. Focus on cotton, wool, linen fabrics. Nothing with polyester or plastics. Natural fibers last longer. For example all my boots cost about $400 and I’ve had them for over 15 years with only having to pay to get them resoled. I understand you may not be in the position to pay that amount. It is just a reference to the point of longevity of the items you buy vs the price
Go to J Crew, Banana Republic, Abercrombie, and GAP and try things on. Then go to J Crew Factory, Banana Republic Factory and GAP factory and wait for Black Friday sales, and go to your thrift store and look for things you like. The Factory things on sale can be up to 50-70% off retail, and thrift stores even deeper discount, 80-90% off retail. At thrift stores I pay 5-20$ per piece for BR, GAP, J Crew, Abercrombie brand clothes. Once in a while they have Everlane or Sezanne deeply discounted. ETA: Of course the Factory items are inferior quality to the brand that's why they're more affordable, but they are far better than Shein quality. As you define your style, you can save up or search thrift for the brand quality items.
I find secondhand stores in the area that I know do a good job of curating. Otherwise I’m seeing the same thing you’re seeing!

I buy used clothes always. You can get higher quality clothes that really last for sometimes less than cheap new stuff and it’s better for the environment. My clothes are so high quality that they are still good if I don’t want something anymore that everything can be donated or sold. EBay, Thred Up and thrift /resale stores are all good sources.

I'm slowly converting all my day to day tshirts over to Uniqlo. Great fabric weights, good colors and fit selections across multiple different styles/materials.
I just wash, hang dry or a low tumble to knock out any wrinkles.

Just go to the mall and find your style. Then find those brands online. Men’s clothing is usually better made and costs more than women’s because they know we’ll wear the same 5 shirts for a decade. Patagonia, Johnston & Murphy, kuhl have casual clothes. A bit more expensive but Charles Tyrwhitt and brooks brothers make real nice collared shirts.
Uniqlo is also considered a fast fashion brand, better than others though, I have a jeans from them, but still a fast fashion brand.
If you into basics try Uniqlo. I am not sure they are fast fashion or not. But their basics last me a very long time. Another one if you are woman, then look into farida gupta. I have kurtis from them as old as 2017
If you hang dry your clothes instead of machine dry, your clothing will last twice as long.

Zara — pieces feel way more expensive than they are when you catch them on sale.
