This is gonna be a long look into Taylor Swift's street style from 2010-2025. I've seen bits and pieces about how TS cannot dress, and many folks on here have spoken about how infuriating it is to see her, a billionaire, step out with incoherent outfits and poorly styled hair. I genuinely find this to be an interesting topic, and since Taylor's career has spanned multiple decades, it's interesting to see how despite following trends, Taylor still cannot be coherent or have her own style. So let's get into it!
Perhaps contrary to popular belief, Taylor Swift does have a stylist: Joseph Cassell. I couldn't find an exact date they began working together, but the consensus seems to be that he's been working with her for over a decade starting around her Speak Now album, which was about 2010. So that's where I'll start.
2010-2011 (bohemian librarian who is also a grandma)

So 2010-2011 was filled with a lot of attempted bohemian styles. I feel like the shoes never really match the look. Kitten heels and belts and cardigans and flapper headbands with the giant bohemian bag is a choice. Notoriously, Taylor never wore jeans in the beginning of her career, even going as far as saying she didn't know what size jeans she wore, until she partnered with LEI Jeans in 2008 lol. Get those sponsors I guess! Also I hate the saddle shoes that made frequent appearances in this era.
2012 (Zooey Deschanel/Paddington Bear cosplay era)

The saddle shoes really need to go. However, by 2012 things were definitely a bit more polished than previous years, and I will say that her style at this time was beginning to be slightly more cohesive. Slightly. This was around the Red album, and the twee aesthetic does kind of fit that. To be honest, I am not that offended by this era because she wasn't trying to be anything she isn't, she dressed in non-edgy, uninteresting clothing lol.
2013-2015 (closest thing to a slay we're gonna get)

I am also not offended by this fashion, I think the leggy outfits suit her because of her tall frame. However, just because I am not offended by this the way I'm offended by her current street style, there is still something quite boring about all these outfits. It's the sexiest street wear we've seen from her, and it still looks like it could be from a J.Crew catalog. Her legs do look great though and it's nice to see her lean into that and actually wear tall high heels instead of those saddle shoes and kitten heels. I also think that she actually dressed for her body type here—maybe being surrounded by models caused this rare slay.
2016 (tragic)

Okay queue 2016 and Bleachella. This is where shit really starts to go left in my opinion. 2016 gave us Snakegate, Hiddleswift, and probably a boob job that no one seemed to talk about. This entire era is so disorganized and jumbled—I don't really think the "red lip classic thing" works as well with the attempted grunge aesthetic. I think the red lip actually worked pretty well for the crop tops and skirts and heels—it doesn't work as well in skinny jeans, a white tee, flannel, and sneakers. Also the way she is wearing those Golden Goose sneakers makes me mad lol.
2018-2019 (somehow even more tragic)

I cannot stress this enough—I HATED this era fashion wise. It's just a mess. I don't think the patterns work, I don't like the weird backpacks, I don't think the shoes match the outfits much at all. I would ask Joseph Cassell what he was thinking, but based off these outfits it's pretty clear he wasn't thinking at all. There's just something about every single street outfit from this time period that is so awkward.
2023 (unoffensive, but not good either)

There aren't too many examples of street wear between 2020-2022 due to COVID and also she actually had a life with Joe and didn't shove everything in our faces. 2023 was when Taylor became a billionaire and I honestly feel like it shows. This is when the designer brands became even more of a focus—she wore designer before this obviously, but it was around this time were she's also decked out in jewelry that's so expensive most celebrities are borrowing it for red carpets. I will say that I unironically like the oversized polo and boots look on her, because it's giving "horse girl if she became a billionaire" which is literally what she is lol. Also she actually matched her bag and boots for once there. I wish she'd do anything more to her hair. Also I do like the butterfly jeans she wore for her post-Joe breakup pap walk.
2024-2025 (designer renaissance nobody asked for)

This is really bad guys. Like abysmally so. I literally couldn't pick which photos to include because there are so many examples of just horrible choices. And this is just street wear guys! The red carpet appearances aren't much better. I HATE that skirt with the red shoes, there is not a single piece of clothing that matches in her outfits lately. The designer epidemic is just worse than ever, with constant Cartier and Stella McCartney and showing up to Chiefs games wearing head to toe LV and Gucci. It's soulless and it's like if capitalism were a person and tried to dress normally which is literally what's going on. There are some rare moments of slayage sometimes, but it's usually ruined by something else in the outfit. If she steps out in a flattering Vivienne Westwood corset top, it's paired with shoes that don't match or her hair is weird. Don't even get me started on the TLOAS photoshoot fails.
Final thoughts
I think the peak of this was definitely around the mid 2010s with the skater skirts and crop tops. It fit her brand at the time, she looked great despite there being nothing innovative or new. I think award shows have even worse looks at times (I'm looking at you, 2024 Grammys). Her makeup also worked for those outfits: it was safe and classic.
The issue now is that it kind of feels like she suddenly wanted to be an it girl but doesn't know how to dress. It's odd because I can't really pinpoint why I don't think anything she wears works now, but it just doesn't. There's always something off or random or weird, or if the outfit looks good the hair and makeup misses. I wish she'd dress better because she has a great frame for fashion and outfits, and it's not like she can't afford to fund a better wardrobe or stylist.
The other thing is that she has no signature, something that's kind of weird for someone this famous. Many other pop stars have a signature look or style (Ariana's hair pulled back) or at least an iconic outfit that's instantly recognizable from a performance (Britney's iconic VMAs look with the green top and the snake). Taylor doesn't have that. I wouldn't really associate her with the red lip, and I can't really think of any iconic outfits. Maybe the Junior Jewels t shirt from the YBWM music video, but that's hardly a fashion moment since it's a literal high school band t shirt. I am begging Joseph Cassell to give us anything besides the epitome of a butter sandwich.
