Spider-Noir Series Review: Noir Style, Story, and Cage
spider-noir series review

The Spider-Noir series is worth watching for viewers who want a detective noir take on Spider-Man, a period setting, and a strong Nicolas Cage performance. Users praise the series for its originality and call it one of the best live-action Spider-Man projects in years. The series may suit viewers who prefer grounded superhero stories over plots about saving the earth. Some users found the story slow, so the series may not work for people who want fast action.
Users respond well to the series' noir mood and visual style. Many recommend the black and white version because they feel it captures the genre better. Users also say the color version still has strong cinematography, with careful use of shadow and light that supports the black and white look.
The setting gives the series a strong 1930s New York feel through its characters, dialogue, and overall atmosphere. Users who enjoy detective stories and that era find the series engaging. The series has a niche appeal, though, and several users say its style may not suit everyone.
Nicolas Cage's performance is one of the main reasons users recommend the series. Users describe him as well suited to the noir role and praise his acting. The story gets a more mixed response. Some users like its low stakes and grounded tone, while others say the plot becomes slow, inconsistent, or forgettable in later episodes.
Some users also felt that the series did not receive enough marketing or wider attention, which limited discussion around it. Others found that it did not follow the comics directly. User opinion favors the series for its mood, setting, originality, and Cage, while viewers who need a quick plot or a close comic adaptation may be less satisfied.

Besides the Venom trilogy with Tom Hardy, I never bothered watching any of Sony's other Spider-Man Villain movies! I'm just not interested in watching any spin-offs of Spider-Man's Rogues gallery that don't have anything to do with Spider-Man at all. And after watching the new Spider-Noir series on Prime Video, I realized that this show was something I wanted all along from both Sony Pictures and Marvel! Now I want more live-action or animated contents centered around other alternate versions of either Spider-Man or any other famous Marvel superhero; like DC Comics' "Elseworlds" line of movies and shows!
I'm only two episodes into the show and I've been enjoying it so far, but it shocks me how little noise it's been making. Even within the comic book fandom community itself, I've barely heard anyone discuss this show. By comparison, everything ranging from Daredevil: Born Again to The Penguin had way more of an impact. Hell, I saw more discussion surrounding Punisher: One Last Kill than this one. Without spoiling the show, what do youa ttribute that to?
All the episodes released the same day it got pretty good coverage last week but nowadays if you want more people to talk about your show you do the weekly episode release
Nicolas Cage Nicolas Cages all over this series, and the scripts seem designed to allow Nicolas Cage room to Nicolas Cage.
I watched the first episode, and it was entertaining, i went with the Black and White color option and it looks amazing, and some of the dialogue and delivery from Nicolas Cage are actually funny.
Because if you haven’t. Why haven’t you watched it yet. It’s more Spider-Man content to eat up while we watch for Brand New Day.
But it got me motivated to get back to this guy. And just like with the show we went with a crisp black and white that really makes this guy look his best
Keep your eyes open for more content as always…
When I first heard Nic Cage, I assumed they were de-aging him, and I was less than thrilled. I was wrong. The vibe of a middle-aged, WW1 vet and former crime fighter in Depression-era NY is delightful. 3 episodes in, but I'm entirely on board (and watching B&W).
I'm only two episodes in also but it's great so far.
So far so good. Only two episodes in but I like it so far. Y’all watching it in B&W or color? I went with B&W, it’s a noir, it’s supposed to be in B&W
I watched it, and I liked it a lot. If you're a fan of comic Spider-Noir, you might be disappointed, because it's not much like that. The show leans more into the actual noir genre, and does a pretty decent job of it. Very cliche tropes, but enjoyable.
"Web! Web! Web! Web web web web web!"
I forgot how much cage can act. Love it
Just watched ep 1. I think they got the retro vibe really well. I saw some reviews criticizing that it was a low stakes plot. Personally, I like it. I'm over every superhero movie being about saving the earth from destruction. The stakes were correct for a period film. Watched it in B&W.
Through 4 episodes, I enjoy it, but I wouldn't expect it to be everyone's cup of tea.
Being that it got released all at once, basically every thread on it is “I’m 2 eps in and enjoying so far”. No one had had time to watch it in full but at the same time wanted to be part of the conversation.
What’s the consensus now that some time has passed? Cute gimmick that overstays its welcome? Should have been a movie instead? Does it work as a whole?
I personally think it’s one of the best, most original live action spider-man content we’ve gotten in years.
It’s amazing, binged through the whole thing yesterday. They absolutely nailed the feel of 1900’s New York, from the characters to the dialogue to the general feel. It manages to find this perfect space between full comic book and detective noir and settles into it, combining both genres into something that is just so fun. I really liked how it was following a retired Spider who doesn’t think he’s a hero, and has to build himself back up. It allows for a very unique story of the past coming back to haunt him, and Cage plays this prickly yet kind and brave character very well. The entire cast is excellent, though huge spotlight on Andrew Lewis Caldwell as Dirk Leyden/Megawatt. He hams it up to the absolute highest level, constantly speaking in theatre dialogue and having a ball. Also, loved the body horror angle to the powers, fit the detective story very well. Overall, absolutely fantastic, had an amazing time. Hoping for more projects like this in the future!
Also, the opening theme “Saving Grace”? Banger, so good
I have conflicting feelings about it because what I’ve seen I think is cool. I like Cage’s performance and especially how it was filmed in a b&w style and not just having a filter. Same with the true hue style. And I can appreciate that it’s going in its own direction
But I LOVE that original run of Spider-Man Noir. It was one of the first comics I read as a kid. So I know in the back of my mind I’d just be going “I wish this was just a straight adaptation I really really REALLY do”
No hate to those who are watching and are enjoying like I said there’s a ton I think is cool about it. Least of all being that a friend of mine worked background as a soldier in one scene
I wanna say OP is a bot, but Nicolas Cage love and appreciation is a natural thing...a human thing.
Black & white. Save a click.
So much text to say " i like b&w better "
