I'm currently using a pc with a Rx 6800 and a Ryzen 5 5600x with a 1080p 165hz monitor and thought about upgrading. I'm torn between the Samsung Odyssey G5 LC34G55TWWPXEN and the Samsung Odyssey G7 LS28BG700EPXEN. On the one hand there is a 1440p Ultrawide monitor on which I get better framerates than the 4k monitor and on the other hand there is a 4K monitor which is smaller but has a more appealing display (I saw both in store, and the difference is noticeable). I was wondering if the performance in FPS would be comparable, since the 4k monitor is smaller than the 1440p one. The 4K monitor is only $30,- more expensive, so price isn't an issue. What is adviseable? Selling and upgrading my gpu down the road is always an option.
I just bought Asus rog swift pg27ucdm I changed it from my old 1080p and I love it. But I have a rx 9070 gpu, and from what I heard its great for 1440p but too weak for 4k so I bought this monitor with a thought that I will have to play newer titles in 1440p and use 4k for older games and browsing. But with fsr4 (with dlss probably even more) games like cyberpunk or horizon forbidden west look and run much better on 4k with balanced preset, than on 1440p native. So is there any reason to buy 1440p monitor if you have a budget for a similar 4k one?

I have gamed on 4K and 1440 and can tell you my own experience is that 1440 is the sweet spot for gaming. I have not seen enough image quality difference in gaming to justify the extra GPU cost for a 4K display. Plus to me 3440x1440 is near the epic display resolution for RPG and Strategy gaming.
I prefer smoothness and 1440p is good enough. 4K is crisp but if its only sub 60 fps I cant say I enjoy it.
1440p is perfect balance of sharper image and good performance. 4K if you had higher end GPU. Many games today arent well optimised like Borderlands 4 its nearly impossible to play at 4K with good performance unless you use frame generation and DLSS Performance which defeats the purpose of 4K.

So, I have an old config which work pretty well for me. Three 1080p monitors, a RTX3070, etc..
I'm an old gamer, switching games often, between rpg, roguelikes, action/rpg, sims, construction/automation... One of the only genre I don't really play are multi-player competitive games, and fast fps (expect a few).
Now, my config is enough to run all latest years heavy titles with good performances (elden ring, monster hunter wilds, and some other resources heavy games), and right now I'm playing Borderlands 4.
The perfs are.. okay, except some annoying slowdown at some points, notably when switching in and out of map. But it made me look at forums to see how the others are faring, and i noticed that... everyone play in 4k??? Seems like I skipped some years of upgrades, the lowest I'm seeing played is 1440p.
So, my question is, is 4k so impacting visually to be worth investing in it? I've never be bothered by 1080p, but have no experience of 4k. If I wanted to upgrade my machine, I'm looking at a new high-end GC, and one to three new monitors, and probably more if I want to avoid a bottleneck in CPU, RAM or other.
Yes, 1440p has no value in gaming in 2026. As you said, 4K with DLSS looks significantly better than native 1440p while maintaining the same performance load. You can safely ignore the people commenting on frame rates—their understanding of 4K is stuck in 2016.
If you are just playing single player or don’t care to be that competitive in multiplayer, there is nothing wrong with 4k 60fps

Yup worth it to me since I play story mode games, have been playing in 4K since 2021. I ll upgrade the GPU when it struggles to get playable frame rates in 4K
I’d say 1440p is the sweet spot, good monitors start at 170$ (350-400cd brightness, nice colors, good stand, 27“ and 165-180hz IPS), 4k is only noticably sharper in bigger screen sizes and way harder to run, but modern GPUs definitely can deliver a great 1440p performance, even with a 350$ 9060xt 16gb and quality upscaling looks good there as well so I’d say that’s the best we have currently
4k is a very noticeable upgrade over 1080p, but you don't have enough GPU horsepower to take advantage of that on your current build.

I dont think its worth the trade off. From 15fps to 360fps. we came a long way for more frames. Now back to square 1 ? 60 fps.
Even most games hardly reach 60fps in 4K. I never played 4k, such just want to know and I see people struggling with poorly optimized games , playing around with DLSS FSR blah blah.
After I started playing in 240fps , with average 144fps in all games, 60 fps is really a strain to eyes.
Does 60 fps feel better in 4K or people are just ok to sacrifice FPS for resolution..

Depends on the game… if its a casual cinematic game (RDR, Witcher, Crimson, Assasins Creed Black flag, Cyberpunk etc) - 4K is a massive upgrade. People tend to underestimate how good 4K looks. It feels like playing in a movie. Amazing experience. Plus, 60FPS is not bad. PS5 delivers 60FPS on performance settings. Its good enough.
If its a competitive game - Tekken, COD, Marathon, Valorant, CS - Higher the FPS, the better. In these games people deliberately turn their graphic settings to Low for max FPS, so, 4k gaming here makes no sense.
Basically the choice is upto you - Open World n Variety gaming - Choose 4K. Competitive Online Gaming - Choose higher FPS
Maintaining a 4K capable system is absolutely within reach for a lot of people, but it requires a much larger budget than maintaining a 1440p system which requires a larger budget than maintaining a 1080p system.

With this build can I play in 4K with good fps or should I play in QHD?
So I've been playing at 4k res for about 7 years now on PC. My two cents are that, for a screen size below 32" there's no point in 4k unless you need the additional resolution for non-gaming tasks, and above that size you'll likely see a very noticeable difference in visual quality (from 1440p).
It is however becoming increasingly difficult to run AAA titles at 4k60 with what I'd consider a higher end GPU (4080 super), and unless you want to continue to invest a lot of money into your PC to keep up with AAA titles, I would go for 1440p, as it strikes a great balance between performance and quality.

I have just recently finished upgrading my computer. I have a Ryzen 7 9700X, RTX 5070 OC 12GB, and 32 gigs of ram that I bought about a year ago (thank goodness).
My wife is switching jobs and needs monitors, but is willing to take my current 1080p 27 inch monitors and will let me get new ones. I am a casual gamer/web consumer. Games include Eve Online, Enshrouded, Expedition 33 and some older games that probably wont matter. No Fortnite or other esports games. I would also like to stay with the 27 inch size.
In an effort to try to be budget conscious, I was thinking of the Samsung Odyssey G5, a IPS panel 1440p monitor with a decent refresh rate for 179.99 on Amazon. I am still kind of leaning that way, but my wife said "This is your moment - get what you want" so I started diving into other things to get something better. Which led me down a rabbit hole of OLED, Mini LED, and more numbers about things that I didn't even knew I cared about.
My current Pie in the Sky choice is the KTC M27P6 Mini LED with 4K, dual mode, etc. You all probably know more about this monitor than I can put here. Amazon has it for 424.97 right now - I just don't know if I want to spend 850 for two of them. And then there are the rumors about panel quality that give me some pause as well. The refreshed ones (yes, I looked at them - they may even have a better chance of being better tested, yeah?) for around 350.
I am 70% sure I want to stay with Mini LED. KTC has the M27P20 Pro at 305.99 that is still 4k, mini LED, decent refresh rate but the HDR is lower and the local dimming is supposed to be not so good. There are also some other choices of Mini LED that are 1440p, and some plain IPS panels with much lower HDR that are 4K in the 300 range that I could look at.
I think I would rather get high-end panel in a technology family (IPS) than get a low end one in the next technology family (Mini LED). Is that sound thinking?
The real question is in the subject line - Should I really care about getting a 4K monitor? I have never played a game on even a 1440p, let alone 4K. The RTX 5070 can do 4K reasonably well from what I understand, but it's strength is in 1440p, and I would probably more often be gaming in that just for performance reasons. I am relatively sure that whatever I buy would be an upgrade over what I have now. I just don't know if I will be happy enough with the 4K performance enough to justify getting 4K monitors that have lower quality/features instead of a couple of really nice 1440p screens. Or if I should just go with the Pie in the Sky option.
