6 Affordable Sports Cars for Fun and Value

If 0-60 times are all you care about you might as well buy any used EV lmao

I (28m) enjoy sports cars and something quick. Given the streets in LA are sometimes rough that does play a factor in it. I would prefer a 2 door minimum 4 seats but wouldn’t be opposed to a 4 door. Priority is 0-60 and it being quick. I would prefer buying used (although maybe 30k miles max) as I can get more bang for my buck. Feel free to ask more questions for any more clarity needed. Hoping to get some good ideas so your thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Edit: wow, was not expecting to get so many responses. At this point I think every car in the price range has been listed, but I get the feeling I will probably have to go with the top 3 I’m seeing here which is Porsche, Mercedes’, bmw. I guess German it is…

With how bleak the prospect of owning a $250-400K house is for most of them these days, maybe gen Z and Alpha will decide to pour what money they can make into something else, like a $40K car, and then load it up with mods instead of hoping for a promotion that will never come in order to be able to afford the mortgage after they've saved enough for the downpayment.

I mean, so many of them are working full time while living at home with not a lot of hope for the future in their respective fields. So why not just buy a GR86 or a Miata or entry level Mustang and wrench on it like you're playing Forza Horizon in real life? If the prospect of saving for a house seems so untenable?

I think that's partly why Toyota stands defiant in releasing all of these modern designs like the Supra MK5, GR86 and the upcoming MR2 redesign. They're not just doing it because they wanna be 'cool with the kids'. They're betting that car culture will surge once the youth of today graduate high school and realize how stuck they are.

I wouldn't consider a mustang a sports car. Muscle car, yes. If you want a fast, cheap, sports car you're probably looking at old Corvettes. If you want an adorable sports car that isn't

in my opinion i love the ct5-v, could maybe find a 2021 or newer with under 50k miles under $50k. also any bmw that has the B58 inline 6 turbo engine paired to the ZF8HP auto transmission is very reliable, like the M240i/M340i, those will probably be a popular recommendation as theyre sporty, quick, luxurious, dependable, and are a good value for the price.

In the mid 4s range 0-60

Only thing I could find that fits this is the Mustang Ecoboost. Looks pretty cool and the test drive was great might move forward with it.

Miata is always the answer.

A used C5 Z06 - had one for 2 years, sold it for more than I paid for it. Undeniably quick.

A supra is more akin to a BMW than a Toyota they made the engine. BMW makes amazing engines though.

Not technically a sports car but close would be s550 generation mustang GT. Will be the fastest by far for that price range.

Porsche Boxster/Cayman

Boxsters are around ~$10k cheaper than Caymans, and manual transmissions on Porsches are in more demand so they get markups.

For $50k you can find a decent 987.2 or 981 model. The 718s you can find too but probably a high mileage one or base model. The 987.1 and 986 models are from Porsche’s IMS years and they need additional care.

Try to do basic maintenance yourself or take to a good independent Porsche mechanic. Can google DIYs or recommendations for mechanics (Rennlist forums are fantastic). The dealers will charge you arm and leg for maintenance (you get fancy coffee tho).

If you want to be super pedantic, most people would define a sports car as a 2 seater, or possibly a 2+2 (a coupe with an impractical "insurance" back seat.)

The goal is to be as light weight as possible and maximize handling (so rear-wheel-drive or an AWD system that is not FWD-biased), so the Miata is one option. Something like the BRZ/FR-S is another. Used Z-cars, etc. all fit those "true sports car" requirements. That's why those suggestions pop out because the alternatives (Boxster, Corvette, Supra, etc.) are not as affordable.

If you're willing to live with something like a hot hatch (FWD or AWD with a FWD-bias), that's a separate suggestion?

The Miata with a manual is one of the finest sports cars you can get at any price. It isn't fancy, just very fun to drive. Your budget allows for top trim factory fresh. The current generation is rock solid reliable, as are most of the previous generations. I had a 2019 Club, best car I've ever driven.

Other good options new are the brz/gr86, WRX and Elantra N. None of these are likely to have reliability issues if kept stock.

For used cars, the Nissan Z, Supra/BMW Z4 (same car, different body panels) are solid options. On the more sport sedan side, the BMW M340i and Genesis G70 3.3T would be top contenders.

The G70 you need to be a bit careful with. People beat the shit out of them and so there is no shortage of 2-3 year old cars with 20k miles with a basket case of drivetrain issues. The car has a 100k mile warranty but people void it regularly. Same issue as Infinti Q50, great cars, terrible owners.

GR86/BRZ probably the best value out there. For a sports car, I think buying new is worthwhile given you don’t know how the last person took care of the car. You get a warranty, piece of mind, and a really fun car for under 40k

As soon as you combine new and used, the recommendations can be endless. 

You're talking from a 20 year old Corvette to a brand new Miata, and everything under the sun. 

Should probably stick to new or nearly new only. Gr86 is a great car. For new cars at 35k to just drive around on the street, I'm buying an ecoboost mustang

I’m going to be in the market soon for a new car (or new to me) and have been looking at what is out there. My budget will be around $45K-$50K. I’ve been really interested in the newer Toyota Supras and figured Toyota’s reputation for reliability would apply.

Any thoughts on that or alternatives would be appreciated.

The Supra is made by BMW, with the Toyota brand. And relatively reliable. Consider cars with that engine, B58!

Hey there! I want to buy a cheap 1st sports car. (Edit: let’s replace sports car with “fun” car)

Here are my goals.

- $10,000 or less but if $15,000 is needed to get what I want then so be it.

- reliable. I want something that I don’t expect to break all the time. I want to have confidence in the car. Assuming I get a clean one.

- manual transmission is a must.

- cool factor. I am open to unique or quirky suggestions. Or even things that others might not think are cool.

- I prioritize fun over speed. It does not have to be a rocket ship. Just an engaging passion car

- some level of practicality and safety. While I love the Miata I just feel like it’s a little too impractical for what I need. Like I would love to potentially be able to fit 4 people in it. Also I don’t know how accurate this is but the size of the Miata freaks me out a little bit. I feel like if I got hit by a car it would literally run me over. Some level of safety would be great.

I know this is a tall order and I will need to compromise on some of these categories regardless of what I choose. But I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Elantra N is better than those, way more powerful than all of them, pretty reliable, very cheap, and look awesome

Probably not your thing given you've listed newer cars, but bmw z3's are super cheap, fun, and gorgeous. I personally own the 1.9 and it's a blast, and I know the engines are super reliable. You could probably still get a decent condition higher spec one for that money!

If you want actually sporty, the GR86 is the only option on this list.

The K4 is nice, good tech integration, but unproven reliability long term. Kia is getting better but recent history has not been without flaws. The best part of the K4 is the tech but you say you don’t care about that.

The Camry is dependability king, but it’s a big sedan and there’s nothing sporting about it, regardless of what stickers NASCAR uses.

The Honda Civic is a great all-rounder and might even be fun to drive but ironically it’s not sporting in its “sport” trim. You’d have to reach to SI or Type R.

The GR86 is the clear winner if sporty is what you want. It’s reliable, economical, fun to drive. It’s the least practical here because it’s a smaller coupe but that’s also what makes it out-maneuver these other cars.

Ez. Mk7 (2015-2020 I think) gti. Ez to maintain. Manual, you can get them in a 2 or 4 door. Base power of about 210 hp. With a stage 1 tune you can get close to 300 without any modifications and it’s a very light car. Go to . You’ll see lots of mk7’s getting over 200k miles som even 300k
