Free Games on Steam: Top Picks and How to Find More
free games on steam

Plenty of games on Steam are genuinely free, and the top player picks are Warframe, HoloCure, Helltaker, Team Fortress 2, and The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog. Many of these give you a full experience without constant pressure to buy in-game currency. Some free-to-play titles still carry microtransactions, so expect that in a few cases. Together these five cover an action RPG, a survivor-style game, a puzzle game, a multiplayer shooter, and a visual novel.
Warframe leads the list. It is an extensive action RPG with a phenomenal core gameplay loop, though players warn that its mechanics can confuse you at times and opinions differ on the current state of the endgame updates. HoloCure sits right beside it for fans of the genre. It is a fan-made game in the Vampire Survivors style, and each VTuber character has their own kit to build around. One player said they unironically like it more than Vampire Survivors.
The other picks are lighter. Helltaker is a short, polished puzzle game where a man descends into hell in pursuit of a demon girl harem. Team Fortress 2 is an old multiplayer shooter that remains a solid pick, and one player logged over 1000 hours on it. The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is a free murder-mystery visual novel that one player called "way better than it had any right to be".
Finding more free games takes a few tricks. Click the Steam search bar without typing anything, and the first result is a page of games at a 100% discount. You can also open the search filters and set the maximum price to free. SteamDB has a free promotions page with direct links and a heads up on future deals. Watch for limited-time giveaways too, since some games that normally cost money go free for a short window, and users post those links when they appear.
Players shared a few cautions as well. Some free games, especially those given away in bundles, are asset flips, which means someone built them cheaply from store-bought assets. One user said Car Mechanic Simulator was a legit game and the Warhammer title was fine, but the rest in one giveaway looked like asset flips. Another user stopped trusting free games after the malware reports. Learn the difference between games that are always free-to-play, which often include in-game purchases, and paid games offered free for a limited time.
Top picks
- Warframe Extensive free action RPG with a phenomenal core gameplay loop.
- HoloCure Fan-made Vampire Survivors-like game where each VTuber has a unique kit.
- Helltaker Short puzzle game about pursuing a demon girl harem.
- Team Fortress 2 Classic multiplayer shooter with players over 1000 hours in.
- The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog Murder-mystery visual novel that players call surprisingly well written.

Yesterday or two days ago someone posted a link on how to find free games on Steam that aren't consistently free (games that cost money but are just free for limited time)
I've unfortunately lost the link and was wondering if anyone grabbed it and doesn't mind sharing it.
It’s been almost two years since my last giveaway! Unlike my previous ones, which were very short, this one will run for 24 hours, ending at 9:00 PM UTC on 26/07/2026.
I’ll be Steam-gifting £200 worth of games in total to commenters on this thread.
There are no requirements to enter other than to try to make a person (loved one or random person!) smile, and tell everyone how you did it! :)
Winners will be chosen at random, of course, but to spice things up, I’ll be writing an algorithm that takes everyone’s game requests and finds a combination that gets as close to the £200 total as possible without exceeding it.
To enter, comment with the game you'd like and your steam profile, and how you made someone smile.
Good luck!
Tf2 is an amazing pve game (every match there's only bots)
Gravity Circuit is a good one if you like classic platformers something like Megaman Zero
I was browing Steam and found quite a few free games that I thought looked either cozy or cute. Since so many of you are doing give-aways, I thought it would be nice to share these too!
The Palace on the Hills - Prologue (not a full game, but looks so cozy!)
Redumption
Alpacalypse
Keeper of the Valley
Light of Alariya
Grizelda: Lynx and the Nine Lives
Drekirokr: Dusk of the Dragon
Yubu The Shoeventure
Guano
Its literally more often free than its not.

If you click on the search bar on Steam, the first result without typing anything are 100% discount games.

I go through phases of playing every free game I can get my hands on so I want to know some of your favorites. I will try just about anything, without exaggeration. Bring me your tired, your weak, and your weary and I will do it lol.
So yeah, what are your favorites? Or what are some that are just so ludicrous/fobbish you had to mention them?
Mindustry isn't free on steam, but the game is actually open source! You can download it for free on their github or itch.io store.
It has similarities with Factorio but it's more like a tower defense game. I highly recommend it.
Check out SteamDB’s free promotions page for direct links and more deals in the future.
Like the title says, what's good to play in the 'Free Games' section that isn't just an excuse to try and get you buying in-game currency and all that bullshit.
Am kind of desperate to have something to play at the moment and have explicitly avoided that part of the website previously, thought maybe the other fine people on TBFP might be able to point me in the direction of something decent in there.
Team Fortress 2, over 1000 hours on it
If you're willing to do some digging, there's a games journalist named Dominic Tarason who put together a huge Free PC Games List in a google spreadsheet with 300-someodd entries. I'm not sure if the rules here would allow linking it directly, but if not then I can just send you the list elsewhere.
