Good Multiplayer Role Playing Games

✓ Top answer Community-sourced, written up by

There are lots of great multiplayer RPGs that fit different playstyles, so pick one that matches how you and your friends like to play.

Party-based tactical / story-heavy

Divinity: Original Sin 2 — great for co-op decisions and turn-based combat. "Divinity 2 for sure."
Baldur’s Gate 3 — heavy choice-driven RPG, works well in co-op. "I think if you liked Divinity then you’ll love Baldur’s Gate"
Solasta — similar to BG3/DOS2 but often cheaper and good for tabletop fans. "Solasta is a similar option to bg3 and dos2."

Action / loot-focused co-op

Diablo IV / Path of Exile — fast loot runs and good for casual drop-in play. "Diablo IV"
Remnant / Remnant II — Souls-like combat with co-op and distinct roles. "Remnant: From The Ashes ... the traditional Dark Souls gameplay mixed with fancy gunplay"
Borderlands series — goofy, loot-heavy shooter-RPG great for friends. "All the borderlands games roleplaying fps"

Survival / action RPGs with coop

Outward — survival-focused, co-op friendly, more preparation than power fantasy. "Outward is split screen co-op."
Enshrouded / Valheim / Minecraft (modded) — open-world coop with base building and roleplay potential. "We're currently playing Enshrouded which you may enjoy also."

MMOs and roleplay-friendly worlds

Final Fantasy XIV — strong story and large RP community (free trial available). "The only MMO where people care about the story and one of the best for RP... FF14 hands down."
Guild Wars 2 — active for PvE and accessible if you buy expansions. "Guild wars 2"
Neverwinter Nights — classic persistent worlds and DM-run servers for deep RP. "Definitely either neverwinter nights or neverwinter nights 2."

If you want very role-specialized co-op (hard role limitations), check games like Darktide, Deep Rock Galactic, or Barotrauma for tight role responsibilities. "If you want to test your friendships, try Barotrauma."

Bottom line

Pick one based on whether you want story and choices, fast loot and action, survival crafting, or MMO-style social play, and it’ll likely be a hit with friends.

Do you have any suggestions of co-op games where everyone has a dedicated role and tasks they have to do? The more specialist the better. Basically, games where every player gets to do their own job, and the end goal depends on everyone doing their part as best as they can. From as simple as having a door with two handles that requires two players to open it to as complex as it can be. For example...

  • Void Crew - each player has a dedicated role between a pilot piloting, gunners shooting, engineers keeping the ship in one piece and the guns loaded.
  • Fellowship - (insert any Holy Trinity setup here) having a party with characters with specific roles, without the "everyone is a different flavour of dps" approach.
  • Op: Tango - asymmetrical puzzle game where each of the players has a limited amount of information, and communication is necessary to beat the game.

For examples of what I don't want, Helldivers 2 (everyone is a generalist and everyone splits up half the time anyway), Peak (everyone is a generalist and one good player can run ahead and solo while three dead people get to watch and do nothing), Vampire Survivors (everyone is a generalist and a dps and you don't interact with the other player).

No MMOs, and preferably not turn-based (eg Baldur's Gate). Also, "just limit yourself to roles-specific tasks" doesn't exactly help with my group, the game needs to set hard limitations.

Hey folks, looking for some solid recommendations on Co-Op RPGs as I am struggling to find something that would fit my pretty tight criteria, hopefully the community can help here! (Playing on PC)

Criteria:

- If it's not full RPG, at least solid RPG elements

- Not MMORPG

- "Choices Matters" is a big plus

- No cartoonish graphics (i.e. For The King)

- Not hack and slash (i.e. Diablo)

- No "second player waits around until fight starts" (i.e. Rogue Trader, Wasteland 3)

- Not BG3, Divinity: Original Sin (1&2) - already finished. In fact, BG3 is probably ideal example of the game.

Solasta just didn't click even though it's extremely similar gameplay and graphics wise. I won't specifically aim at isometric, Larian games were just extremely good and seems to be strongly designed with Co-op in mind

Any advise is appreciated!

If this isn’t the right subreddit for this post pls lmk. I CANNOT figure out where to post this and not much comes up on Google, probably too many overlapping terms lol

I’m a life-long roleplayer. Text-based, ttrpg's, solo ttrpg's, whatever.

A few years ago I built a pc and got back into pc gaming, and I’m feeling the need to geek it up even more. Looking for beginner friendly games that work well for roleplaying, either with a small group of pals or that have public roleplay servers.

Especially ones in settings that make for really funny scenarios (we simply must not be serious for too long), and especially ones that have/can be modded with voice chat. It doesn’t HAVE to be in the roleplay genre, the two I thought of off the bat were like Minecraft and Valheim. Thanks :D

!! TL;DR If you roleplay with friends in games, which do you like best and what games did you start with? Looking for vc-enabled beginner-friendly games with enough to keep me occupied and make funny stories with.

Like medieval fantasy type. One i can play with friends and one can be a rogue and the other a mage. And we fight enemies on our way. Doesn't have to have good story. Doesn't have to be medieval but should have a class system. And good combat is much appreciated. Thanks.

My husband and I like playing games alongside each other, so we can discuss as we go along. Examples of others we've played before include;

Dragon age (origins through to veilguard)

Fable series

Mass Effect (1 through to Andromeda)

Balder's Gate

Claire Obscur

Greedfall

Oblivion

We have done couch co-op and are open to it, but prefer independent playing. We like a romance/ companion mechanic in some capacity, but it's not vital. We're looking for our next game and open to any suggestions!

Edit: sorry I forgot to add that we play on Xbox and PC so it has to be something available on both. Thanks those who've already suggested :)

Edit2 - thanks all. Some really great suggestions that we'll explore :)

I haven’t played an online RPG in over a decade. I have been playing single player content mostly. I kinda miss engaging with other players. Which one is worth starting in 2025, has an active community and is free-to-play friendly? I don’t really mind the platform, pc, console or mobile.

Any suggestions? Thank you!

I'm looking for a new game to get into for my PS5. Preferably one you can play two players on the same console.

I'm pretty new to the genre. Played Elden ring, the Witcher and Souls of Divinity 2. Been looking at getting Baulders Gate 3 . Any suggestions would be great.

Baldur's Gate?

Elden Ring? (Add seamless coop if youre on pc)

If you want to test your friendships, try Barotrauma. I would dare to say it's absolutely IMPOSSIBLE without dedicated cooperation. And each task is very involved, so while technically you COULD be a jack of all trades, it would most likely kill you and your crew.

Can't go wrong with any of these games:

Dungeons of Sundaria has splitscreen and online co-op for 1-4. The game allows you to play as a Mage, Rogue, Ranger, Warrior, or Cleric.

All characters have some sort of healing capability but the Cleric has a self heal + group heal + revive. They have decent ranged damage, a good AoE deployable at higher level, and strong defense.

The mage is your traditional spellcaster, with a good mix of single target and AoE damage. Ironically the mage has the ability to take on the role of tank in a duo with another non-Warrior class. This is because the mage can summon a clone that draws enemies towards it, distracting and luring enemies away from your party.

The rogue has heavy single target damage, a decent self heal, stealth, and the ability to drop aggro.

Warrior is essentially melee/close range only. They can go 1h+shield, dual wield if I'm not mistaken, or 2h. Different abilities for each set up. They have the heaviest self healing with a instant self heal and a heal on attack. They can also aggro enemies. Best defense.

Ranger has the best single target and ranged damage end game but starts off very weak early on.

Cleric and Mage are the most well rounded characters but you can easily play through the full game with any 1 or 2+ combo of classes. One caveat is that the final dungeon will be VERY difficult on the HARDEST difficulty setting without a Warrior. But the game has 3 difficulty levels for each Dungeon. Difficult determines the amount of EXP you get, quality of armor drops, and rarity of crafting resources (used to make generic gear or class specific armor/weapon sets).

Coridden is another great option! You have a fully customizable class system so you can easily be a DMG mage of various types or even a summoner mage or healer mage. Your friend can be a stealth melee fighter or stealthy ranger. Lots of options since you can have 3 active skill trees at any one given time (and easily switch whenever in town). There is also a cool summoning pet system with mounted combat. On top of that there is a shapeshifting system independent from your character class. You could be a mage of some sort for your human class but could decide to be a tanky ramox/hound/Dragolem for your shapeshift or a mage-like spitter if you want to play pure mage whether human or shapeshift. For your rogue friend there is a Panther shapeshift which has stealth so they could also go pure rogue human and shapeshift form. Shapeshifts also have sub-classes you can customize so for example the Panther could be built as a life leach attacker, or as more of a burst DMG out of stealth, AoE poison, or dash & charge type of damage.

But wait, there's more! In Coridden you also have MOUNTED SHAPESHIFTING! This means when your friend shapeshifts (and visa versa) you can mount each other's characters! If either of you add in the Captain skill tree this can be really handy because Captain gets to heal them self + their rider (or mount) in addition to boosting DMG/speed etc. 12 skill trees in total and at least 4 of them can summon pets that fight and can be mounted. Healer, Captain, and Summoner are 3 of those 4 with pets.

Portal Knights is a base builder game from the team behind Enshrouded. It has Minecraft like building but more RPG elements including unique classes (Rogue, Mage, Warrior, Ranger, Druid). Mage is fun but honestly I'd recommend Druid + Rogue. The Druid is essentially a hybrid that can heal/tank/melee/magic. They can use all the Mage's spells and have access to shapeshift into different creatures with different fighting styles and utility. Bear is defensive, flower best has ranged DMG + heals, spiders have mobility (sun spiders can heal), gazer/bat can shoot chain lightning and glide, slimes have AoE damage, etc. It's one of my favorite base builders. Played through it multiple times which I normally will not do with a game.

Divinity original sin. But it is hefty

So me and my friend are looking for games to
Play together. We usually shared survival crafting games but our other friend who we were playing with is unfortunately on a break due to personal reasons

We were looking for multiplayer games and I mostly play tactical RPGs so we haven’t had much luck in finding one on steam. I thought about Divinity 2 and BG3 but I know that’s pretty pricey for him rn and I don’t wanna buy it on another system (I already have both on my PlayStation)

Any recommendation would be awesome :)

Edit: this is on steam!

Definitely either neverwinter nights or neverwinter nights 2. Both have multiple ‘persistent worlds’ with DM’s creating ongoing player and world stories, active communities of a dozen to hundreds of players, and multiple settings (I think most all from the D&D universe). Most can be played solo without much difficulty too, so you don’t always need a group but can work on your character whenever.

Best RP experience with strangers I’ve had in a video game - you can search around for lists of persistent worlds to get a feel for their settings, custom rules, and play style.

I think if you liked Divinity then you’ll love Baldur’s Gate

Outward is split screen co-op.

Skyrim has a multiplayer mod that works

No Man Sky has a standard multiplayer lobby now

ghost recon wildlands/ Breakpoint have massive worlds to conquer, yes less of a RPG but a great co-op teamwork game. (if you play these turn off most of your hud besides ammo and health counters and UI that shows your selection of RoF and silencer ect. It makes the game 10 times better if you need to remember enemy positions and where the objective is)

Wasteland 3 and Neverwinter Nights

As a co-op connoisseur I can't skip this question:

  • TrinityS - a short experience inspired by FFXIV (and other tab-based MMOs), with full focus on raiding. Everyone's job is distinctly different and everyone has to do their respective tasks. Top-down combat with an "autoattack" system based around AFKing that feels unintuitive at first (your abilities power up the longer you stand still, so you want to not move unless you absolutely have to).
  • Granblue Fantasy Relink - a singleplayer story followed by a looot of multiplayer content (about 4x as much). Every character has unique mechanics, which should count as "classes" in a way. Gameplay is arena combat best compared to something like Monster Hunter about as co-op as you make it be, as the characters range from "I don't care what you do I punch the enemy" to "Get in my bubble for protection".
  • WH40k Darktide - someone else mentioned it but I have to double down. It's easily one of my all-time favourite games. Unique classes, heart-pounding excitement from start to finish. Mission-based horde shooter. They've got the intense first person combat down to an art.
  • Ravenswatch - a roguelike, and more top-down. Again, not class-based, instead characters-based (but they have distinct roles in a team). Your wish for a melee/ranged should be fulfilled with Romeo & Juliet, the newest characters added who are fully co-op focused with interacting abilities.
  • Remnant: From The Ashes and its sequel - "American Dark Souls" - the traditional Dark Souls gameplay mixed with fancy gunplay, and of course, classes. Different players can specialize in different roles in the team.
  • Wayfinder - not-an-MMO. A game that was originally meant to be an MMO, ran out of budget, and the devs took what they had and downscaled it into a local game instead. It's got all the good of an action MMO (classes, combat, etc), and everyone in your party can specialize in different responsibilities and roles.
  • Lastly... Did you consider MMOs? Something like FFXIV or WoW might just be what you want.

I feel like co-op games are the truly forgotten kind. It's all a shit-slinging fest between singleplayer gamers and PvP multiplayer gamers complaining about eachother, with co-op just left behind forgotten and abandoned...

We're currently playing Enshrouded which you may enjoy also. I rather like that we can both do quests together or separate in the same world or just do some base building etc

All the borderlands games roleplaying fps

Did you know Where Winds Meet is free on PS5? You don't even need ps+ to play it

What system? How many friends? Can you be more specific than "RPG?" ARPG? CRPG? Action/adventure? MMO? 3D/isometric/pixel graphics? More combat or story focused? New or retro?

Dark Souls 1-3 & Elden Ring are the GOAT, with Nioh 1 & 2 coming very close.

Outward is great, if you don't mind tedious inventory management & a lot of backtracking with no fast travel. But there are lots of great mods that drastically improve the experience and even one that increases the # of people you can play with, if you're on PC. But it's a very aesthetically pleasing & colorful game with difficult but rewarding combat, dungeon exploring, looting & a refreshing take on class building.

Chronicon & Heroes of Hammerwatch are very fun dungeon crawlers with RPG elements (i.e. classes, builds, playstyle freedom, etc) if you're on PC. Chronicon is definitely loot intensive though.

I'm honestly not too big on the isometric ARPGs like Diablo, Baldur's etc, but I found Grim Dawn quite enjoyable. Yet another loot heavy PC game.

I wasn't too big of a fan of the Monster Hunter games tbh, but you might enjoy them. I can see why they're so loved and they have a lot going for them. But idk. The combat was just a bit too tedious imo, with these huge monsters attacking nonstop every 2 seconds and almost never slowing down enough, especially for the slow weapons. And it's EXTREMELY grindy. Be prepared to fight every monster hundreds of times to hopefully have a 2% chance of them dropping the stuff you need for their set. And there are just way too many items and stuff to do.
