It’s a Quest 3s, confirmed with the seller.
I've been thinking of buying a VR headset for a while now, I want to play help wanted 1 & 2, beatsaber... but I'm very afraid that I'll play some games and then I'm not gonna use it anymore. Does the VR headset receive good quality games frequently so that doesn't happen? Is the VR headset experience similar to a console in wich you spend some months waiting for a new game to play or you rarely receive new games? Summarising, is it worth it?
There is no best headset right now. Every headset has its own pros and cons. With enough budget, the best headset is multiple headsets. It depends on what you want to do.
My usual joke answer for silly "unlimited budget" questions is this:
Top end PC with 5090.
Enterprise grade wifi.
Personal football stadium.
Quest 3.
Every headset is a set of tradeoffs.
For PCVR purposes, for most people, the best headset is going to be the Shiftall Meganex 8K Mk II or the Pimax Dream Air. For some people who prioritize FOV above other concerns, it's maybe the Crystal Super QLED. If your #1 priority is optical quality above all else (including display quality), it's Quest 3, but this is going to be a very niche preference to outweigh all the other factors to that degree.
For standalone VR, it's probably just straight-up Quest 3 if you care about game availability. There will be headsets that have better displays, like the GalaxyXR, but they're not better packages all around.
If you don't play games and want to use your VR headset for watching movies for some reason, probably Apple Vision Pro.
So I’ve been wanting to finally get a VR set and do all the fun VR things, but I know absolutely nothing about them.
Could the fine people’s of this sub please give me their recommendations?
Everyone who has responded has been super useful for me. Think I might wait for the Valve frame. I hadn't heard of it before this thread but it looks like it'll be out soon and I do trust Valve to bring the beans
Quest 3 is the best in my opinion, not just because of the great hardware but also has the biggest selection of software.
My favorites are: In Death: Unchained (my favorite game ever), Punch Fit, Audio Trip, Synth Riders, Lazer Thief, Pinball FX VR, Walkabout Minigolf, Moss, Thrill of the Fight, The Climb, Demeo, Vacation Simulator/Job Simulator, Puzzling Places, Pistol Whip, Les Mills Body Combat, Medieval Dynasty, Into the Radius, Crazy Kung Fu, Crisis Brigade 2, Shooty Fruity, Battle Talent, Genotype, Arcade Paradise VR, Electrician Simulator VR, BlazeRush: Star Track, Stencil VR, Real VR Fishing, Superhot VR, Vendetta Forever, Compound, Arizona Sunshine, Smash Drums, Space Pirate Trainer, Blaston, Tetris Effect, Sports Scramble, Pixel Ripped, Ultrawings, Survival Nation.
Most of this stuff just comes free with the Horizon+ subscription, otherwise there's lots of regular demos and timed demos, which I think is important because you want to know if you like it before you buy it. Just watching some videos to decide isn't good enough for VR, you really want to try it yourself first if possible.
In that price range I recommend one of these:
- Quest 3
- Pico 4 Ultra
- PSVR2 with PC adapter (you can use the PSVR2 headset for PCVR via the official PC adapter)
- Pimax Crystal Light
- Quest 3S (this is the budget option if you don't want to spend too much)
Which one to get will depend on your preferences (lenses, display, ability to play wireless PCVR vs no compression artifacts, higher binocular overlap, best tracking, etc), but any of these are good PCVR headsets.
Consider that with a standalone headset (e.g. Quest 3, Pico 4 Ultra, Quest 3S) you also have to buy either a good USB-C cable (which is around ~$20), or a good Wifi6E router/AP to use it dedicated for PCVR wirelessly (good options for this are the ARRIS Surfboard W6U, the Davolink Minions WiFi 6E Router, or the TP-Link Archer AXE75). I personally use the Quest 3 for PCVR wirelessly via a dedicated Wifi6E router and it works great with the Virtual Desktop app.
Regarding games I recommend Half Life Alyx, Vertigo 2, Metro Awakening, and TWD Saints & Sinners. There are loads of other great story-driven VR games but these are just some good ones to start. For multiplayer I recommend you give Forefront a try since it's very addictive and it has a big playerbase.
Wish to get A VR headset specifically for playing VTOL VR and for Sim racing. Would like to spend no more than £1000 but can stretch a little if it's worth it. My very limited research has brought me to the pimax crystal light. My PC is using a 4080 so I can run a lot of headsets I'm sure, but probably best to stay clear of some of the 4k per eye offerings. Any advice is appreciated, as it will get me in the virtual sky faster. Thank you kind users
I think modded galaxy xr is pretty amazing.
Get a Q3 used for under $400.
I’ve been going down the rabbit hole on VR lately, trying to figure out what actually qualifies as the best setup you can get right now if money isn’t a factor. It feels like there’s a lot of debate depending on what you prioritize—raw graphical fidelity, tracking precision, standalone convenience, or just overall immersion.
On one side, you’ve got high-end PCVR setups that push visuals and performance to the limit, especially when paired with a powerful PC. On the other, there are newer standalone headsets that are way more convenient but might sacrifice some visual quality or depth. Then there’s the whole discussion around game libraries—some platforms seem to have way better support and variety than others.
I’m also curious how much accessories and add-ons actually matter in pushing something from “really good” to “best possible experience.” Stuff like upgraded straps, full-body tracking, base stations, haptics, etc.—at what point does it really make a difference?
If you were building the ultimate VR setup today with no budget limit, what direction would you go and why? What do you think actually defines “the best” VR experience right now?
Hi OP, Quest 3 is the obvious choice, spend some of the change on a headstrap, prescription lens inserts if u wear glasses, and better games than gorilla tag lol (sorry couldn't resist).
Update: So Ive been going through a bunch of threads on this trying to figure out what's actually worth getting, here's what people keep saying basically
Meta Quest 3: this is the one most people just default to. passthrough is actually decent now not the blurry mess it used to be, standalone library is solid too so you don't need a beefy pc hooked up. only real gripe ppl have is the meta account/fb login stuff, still annoys people apparently
Meta Quest 3S: basically same guts as the 3 but they cheaped out on the lenses (fresnel not pancake) so fov n clarity take a bit of a hit. makes sense if ur trying to save some cash tho, not everyone needs the best glass
PlayStation VR2: only makes sense if u already got a ps5 tbh. ppl seem pretty impressed w the haptics and eye tracking, sounds genuinely nice. but yea ur kinda locked into sony's ecosystem and standalone use is basically nonexistent
Valve Index: older now but still comes up a lot, mainly for the controllers. finger tracking still holds up against newer stuff which is wild for how old it is. needs a real pc + base stations tho so it's more setup than ppl probably want these days
mainly wanna use it for gaming but wouldnt mind trying fitness/social stuff too if its actually good. ive been eyeing the quest 3 512gb, saw that gorilla tag bundle for $599 on amazon and kinda tempted ngl
open to other headsets too if theres something better in my budget, just not doing psvr2 since i dont have a ps5
also has anyone done the pcvr thing instead, like quest 3 + link cable or a totally different headset? is it actually better or just more of a hassle than its worth
oh and since im basically starting from zero, what games are actually must haves. want a good mix, some solo stuff and maybe a couple multiplayer ones that dont die out after a month
Im looking to buy a headset exclusively for PCVR, my budget is around $700-$1350 (flexible).
PC Specs:RTX 5080
9800X3D
Use Case:Mostly immersive story games (not sims), needs strong immersion and visual quality.
Requirements:• Wired PCVR (No compression)
• No Fresnel lenses
• High visual clarity
• I’d prefer at least 90hz
• Good immersion for story games
DealbreakerI had the PSVR2 in the past, it had horrible persistence blur, It completely ruined the experience for me.
I also would prefer to stay away from basic LCD panels, ones that have no method of improving blacks.
Main QuestionHow important is eye tracking + dynamic foveated rendering in real world VR use?
I’m trying to decide if it’s worth prioritizing a headset with eye tracking, or if I can realistically brute force the performance on my PC.
Currently ConsideringPimax Crystal Light:
Pros:
Higher resolution but still manageable. Higher refresh rate. Good lenses. Better blacks than basic LCD (local dimming)
Cons:
Heavy, comfort concerns. No eye tracking (no DFR). No true OLED blacks.
Bigscreen Beyond 2e:
Pros:
Extremely light weight. Micro OLED, amazing fidelity, very high image quality. Eye tracking.
Cons:
I have to buy Valve Index controllers and trackers, would probably have to buy used to get them at a reasonable price. Resolution is very high (performance concerns).
Hey everyone,
I recently tried VR for the first time on my cousin's Meta Quest 3 and I was honestly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I only planned to play for a few minutes, but I ended up playing for around 20 minutes and had a lot of fun.
I tried Job Simulator and loved the interaction. Being able to actually use my hands, pick up objects, and interact with the environment was something I didn't expect to enjoy so much.
I'm planning to get a Meta Quest 3S soon, and right now I'm looking at
Beat Saber
Job Simulator
I’m interested in games that are fun, interactive, active, or just great experiences to show someone why VR is special.
Are there any other VR games you would recommend for a first-time VR owner?
Thanks!
You have already landed on the best option out there that’s within your budget, The Crystal light is a top performer, personally after owning one I don’t believe there’s anything out there in that price bracket to beat it, you’d need to spend significantly more to see any marked improvement, and even then it won’t be a huge step up, I had the light before upgrading to the Pimax crystal super and the super is certainly not double the price and then some better than the light, to be quite honest the crystal light will give you 85% - 90% of what the super offers at less than half the price, I kinda regret upgrading if I’m honest, along with that what I consider to be a very reasonable price it’s also a lot easier to run and get the most out of without bringing your system to its knees.
If you were building the ultimate VR setup today with no budget limit, what direction would you go and why? What do you think actually defines “the best” VR experience right now?
Well I already have the 5090 and waiting for my Dream Air right now so this.
For me it's the best because it's uncompressed so you get the full image quality your GPU works so hard to render and no added latency.
The resolution is 4K per eye which is almost as clear as looking at a flat monitor.
The lenses are not quite as good as on q3 but they're close.
It's like 3x lighter than most headsets.
Has access to sboys3 software which is light years ahead of anything else and lets you customize basically anything you can imagine.
Has eye tracking.
I'm not a huge OLED guy but it's definitely a plus too.
Imo there are only 3 good options:
- BSB2e -> that's the headset I have and love it. It's far from perfect - eyetracking is not that great here, it's a bit warm, and there is no full resolution at 90hz. I'm running it at 75hz, and form factor, ease of use is amazing. I'm using it pretty much only for simracing/flying. I upgraded from PSVR2 and it's a massive upgrade - visuals are stunning (full lens sharpness, great resolution), super light, easy connect/disconnect (can just unplug the headset from the cable, and not need to unplug the whole cable), integrated audio with an audio strap. I honestly didn't expect the upgrade to be as big as it is. The only thing I truly dislike about it is eyetracking - they need to improve it (it's still in beta).
- Steam Frame -> should be the best wireless option out there, but the visuals shouldn't be that great (LCD + same resolution as Q3)
- Pimax Dream Air -> I've not tested it, but it has great reviews online.
I would stay away from Pimax Crystal Light or Super, or MeganeX. The first two are very bulky + they feel a bit abandoned by Pimax (people still waiting for Lighthouse modules for Super). I've heard bad stories about MeganeX (bad support + low FOV + no eyetracking).
EDIT: I have 4080S and I feel like I'm still not using BSB2's full potential, so I don't think I would benefit much from higher resolution of DA's. I think for that you need 5090.
I've been thinking about buying a VR Headset for about a month now but I can't decide which one.
My budget is about $500.
I heard some good things about the Meta Quest 3 but currently it's at about $600-650 (for a 512gb) in my country, which is quite a price for a first VR Headset.
My main use would be for standalone games on the VR itself or on steam on my PC (I have a AMD Radeon RX 7800xt).
I own a PS5 too but I don't really have any VR games on it currently.
What would you guys think which one should I buy?
If you don't mind dealing with Meta then the Quest 3 is the only choice given your budget. You'll need to budget for more than the link cables though (headstraps)
Someone will suggest Steam Frame as the better device but it'll be out of your budget when it releases.
Valve Index still solid choice even though its getting bit older. The controllers and tracking are really precise compared to Quest and if you already have decent gaming PC the visual quality will be much better. Just keep in mind you'll need proper space setup with base stations
Hey all, I have Meta Quest 2 headsets now, using it about 4 month, and want buy new one. I use it only for gaming. What would you recomendation, I think about Valve right now.
