Pregnancy Nausea Tips That Work Fast: from Unisom to Cold Showers
nausea tips for pregnancy

Unisom plus Vitamin B6 is the fix users recommend most for pregnancy nausea, and many take the two together every night, often with a half tab of Unisom (doxylamine succinate). One user summed it up: "Unisom and B6 every single night!" This combo helps a large share of people, and users take it on a steady schedule instead of waiting for a bad wave. If it does not do enough, doctors can prescribe stronger options. The other big theme from users is to stay ahead of hunger and keep food in your stomach all day.
Users lean on food as much as pills. An empty stomach makes nausea worse, so they eat small meals or snacks throughout the day to keep blood sugar steady. Plain toast came up again and again. Bland carbohydrates like crackers and plain pasta are easier to keep down, and protein helped many users more than they expected. One user wrote, "I found out that protein worked for me!"
Sour flavors are another favorite. Sour candy got the strongest reviews, and lemon or sour fruit can also cut the feeling. Many users say the sour taste distracts from the nausea or neutralizes it. One user said, "Sour candy works the best for me." Keep sour candy in your bag and reach for one when a wave starts.
Quick physical tricks can stop a wave fast. Smelling rubbing alcohol or an alcohol pad can cut the vomiting reflex right away for some users. Cold works too. An ice pack on the neck, cold water on the face, or a jump into a cold shower triggers the Mammalian Dive Reflex and interrupts the nausea signal for a moment. One user described it: "Whenever the wave hits and I feel like I'm 100% about to puke, I jump into a cold shower." Stay hydrated as well, and sip cold water, sparkling water, or Gatorade to settle the stomach and avoid dehydration.
When over-the-counter methods fall short, see a doctor. Users push this point hard because no one needs to suffer through severe nausea. Doctors prescribe Zofran, Diclegis, Bonjesta, or Promethazine when milder options are not enough. One user was blunt about it: "Zofran. Literally nothing else." Another urged action with the words, "Medication! Don't suffer unnecessarily gal!" Ask early, ask plainly, and tell your doctor what you have already tried.

Congratulations! You're pregnant. You know you are pregnant because all of the healthy foods you planned to eat make you want to vomit. And also, there's cheeto dust on your hands.
Here are some things to help with your nausea.
Eat something small as soon as you wake up, although you were almost certainly woken by nausea so it is probably too late. Also, only eat simple bland foods that you can handle, like crackers. But don't eat any foods that will spike your blood sugar, like crackers. And don't go on an empty stomach.
Avoid coffee, which can make your nausea worse. Instead, take unisom+B6 twice a day, because you can't be nauseous when you are unconscious. Also, take it on the empty stomach you could not possible tolerate.
Avoid strong smells, such as peppermint, ginger and the god-awful, unmistakable vitamin -smell, but always take your vitamins. Also, peppermint and ginger can help with nausea, so keep some on hand at all times.
You can try sucking on hard candy during the day, it PROBABLY won't cause gestational diabetes, but you know Myaleigh didn't have any refined carbs during her pregnancy and her son Dylaleigh just got in to baby Harvard, so...
Also, we know you're trying to avoid letting people know that you're pregnant, so wear these VERY VISABLE and hideous Sea Bands. Just tell people you just came back from jazzercise. It will help that you're already sweaty.
Drink at least a gallon of water a day, but only take small sips. Or better yet, ice chips. Have one gallon a day of ice chips. One chip a minute for 24 hours a day, that sounds about right. And also, get plenty of sleep while marathon ice chipping. Don't worry, your AM sleeping pill should help with that.
And if things get really bad, you can always get stronger meds like zofran. Your mother in law definitely won't say things like, "well, in my day, we weren't allowed to take ANYTHING for nausea. We just dealt with it..."
THANKS, SHARON
But seriously, you're probably just feeling a little stressed. Just lie down for a minute, you'll be fine. Lying flat definitely won't make you immediately vomit from the acid rushing up your esophagus.
Happy Magical Pregnancy!
Okay, trolling over. Thank you for indulging in my rant. I'm at 8w with twins and I might die.
Now excuse me, i missed like 8 ice chips while writing this.
Sour candy works the best for me
Not letting myself get hungry - lots of plain toast
Unisom and B6 every single night!
Before you tell me to eat small meals and eat often I already have done that, I have every kind of cracker conceivable in my house and all the ginger. Im talking weird but most effective hacks to get through the peak of morning sickness so you can keep food down and get some sleep, I have 4 weeks left in school (highschool teacher) I need to get through this
Medication! Don’t suffer unnecessarily gal!
U taking b6 25 mgs 3x a day ? And unisom sleep tab at night ? Ask your dr for meds . Zofran didn’t work for me tho but it has for others .
Unisom at night and Zofran in the day
This didn’t really work for me but maybe it will for you! Apparently sniffing lemons or alcohol swabs can help nausea subside. Lemon water can help people too. Other posts in here have tips on medication etc.
I'm new to this sub, and a new mommy. It's very early in my pregnancy, and just this week I started getting morning sickness. The nausea is absolutely horrible! What were some tricks you ladies found really helped with the nausea? I don't really like tea, and I definitely don't like ginger. Peppermint doesn't seem to help, either.
Kind of a crazy tip/trick I have but just trust me. I never see this one posted anywhere else, but it is genuinely saving my life so I feel I NEED to share with the world.
I experience nausea all day for MONTHS when pregnant. I've discovered a trick that helps me IMMEDIATELY when I think I need to throw up. Most tips and tricks are preventative in nature but nobody ever gave me advice for what to do when you already are sick or about to be....
Whenever the wave hits and I feel like I'm 100% about to puke, I jump into a cold shower (if a full shower isn't available or you are too chicken to shock your whole body, splash your face and chest with freezing water instead)
When cold water hits you, it triggers something called the Mammalian Dive Reflex. Your brain instantly gets distracted by the sudden temperature drop. It forces your heart rate to slow down and immediately changes your breathing, which effectively "interrupts" the nausea signals you are getting.
Other options: ice pack/something really cold on back of your neck or shoved in your bra, waistband (on your back).
If any of you try my trick, tell me what you think!! Hope it works for you! 💖
Edit: typos
Smelling rubbing alcohol or alcohol pads.
Ginger. In whatever form you can stomach it. These were my favourite
for me - showering and light yoga at least have me forget i’m nauseous for the time i am engaging in said activity.
Zofran. Literally nothing else. And this didn’t get rid of my nausea completely but it dramatically decreased how much I was throwing up which was a huge relief.
I found ginger biscuits and citrus drinks such as 7up/lemonade/sprite all really helped manage my nausea
Been doing some research for my wife and have been struggling with the same solutions over and over with seeing commonly how they don’t help, so I figured I’d give an ask here
Hi all,
I’m just lost at the moment at what to do. I have nausea all day every day. I wake up during the night to vomit or try to vomit because of the nausea.
I push myself to go to work but end up throwing up at work (I have an office job so it’s very easy to do), but even my office job is getting too hard. I’ve tried every medication with no luck except the slightest relief from ondansetron.
I’m starting to feel just weak and defeated. I’m only 8 weeks so the worst is probably yet to come. I haven’t announced it at work yet, so that’s also awkward seeing I’m always going to the bathroom to throw up.
I’m going to the doctor next week but was hoping for any tips from someone who’s had severe nausea throughout pregnancy? Everything that everyone’s told me so far hasn’t worked, and I’m starting to worry because I hardly go to the toilet now and feel very weak and sick 🥺
If you’ve had HG/severe nausea, please tell me it gets better, or at least it’s worth it 😫
The crackers in bed thing doesn’t work because I can’t even eat crackers without being sick in the morning.
Also I went to hospital last week because I vomited blood, the hospital was so useless and just prescribed me some more meds and said it was probably nothing. I didn’t get any help or advice for managing it. Just was told to come back if I keep throwing up blood (which now I’m not so it’s okay).
What are peoples best nausea management tips? I don't even think I've got it that bad compared to a lot of pregnant people so I feel fortunate but it is still impacting my life quite a lot (that plus fatigue). I'm 6w+5 and it started about 6 days ago. How do people manage it? I am eating a very beige diet right now as it's all I can handle. What seems to work for others to keep the nausea at bay as much as possible? Would love any tips!
I’m a FTM and am currently 7w2d. I had been feeling fine the first few weeks after finding out I was pregnant. Then 7 weeks hit. And it hit me hard. I feel nauseous ALL the time. I haven’t vomited yet, but at this point I feel like I’d rather vomit just to get a small bit of relief from the nausea. I eat and feel nauseous. I don’t eat and feel nauseous. I wake up multiple times a night feeling nauseous. I’ve tried sea bands, ginger candy, sour candy, eating plain foods. I just don’t feel relief. I’ve been crying on and off all day today because I hate this feeling so much. I’m going to ask my doctor for advice at my appointment in a week, but I want to hear what you guys have done so I can get maybe some relief in the meantime. I’m a teacher and am so anxious about having to teach all next week while feeling like this. So please, I’m desperate, give me all your nausea tips!
I found out that protein worked for me! I think the oatmeal brand is Kodiak
Might be too chicken for a full one cold shower, but I’ll try the ice pack!!
I also do distraction tips for when I feel like hurling! They include:
pinching the sh*t out of my arm/leg until I’m in pain, but not breaking skin.
washing hands with HOT water. (Just did this today when I gagged while brushing my teeth. I felt the urge to vomit even after the gagging ended, so the hot hand wash distracted me and the vomit urge passed.)
deep breaths, open the window (if driving) for fresh air
counter-intuitive but EATING! When I felt nauseous, I’d just eat something/anything. My brain would switch from vomit mode to hungry mode.
That has worked for me. I’m 4 months now and haven’t thrown up yet in spite of a super nauseous first trimester!
Staying well hydrated made a surprisingly big difference for me - I always felt most ill when I hadn't been drinking enough water
I remember when I was 5 weeks and I was like why do I have no symptoms? Now I’m 8+4 and the nausea and food aversions hit me like a TRUCK. The nausea seems to happen more so at night?
Anyway, I try my very best not to 🤢 but it’s happened twice now since I’ve been pregnant and I’m trying my best to avoid it, although it makes me feel better after??
Prior to pregnancy, I would make myself 🤢 if I was nauseous just to make myself feel better and I don’t want that to be a habit this pregnancy but every time it’s happened, my body just does it on its own.
This is #3 and the first pregnancy to make me sick like this on and off. Liquid IV? Night time crackers? Tell me allll of the weird things that helped and kept you afloat!
