Top BookTok Authors Readers Name Most Often

Colleen Hoover, Meghan Quinn, and Abby Jimenez are the top BookTok authors users name most, and all three dominate the romance side of the platform. Hoover leads the pack, though some users feel tired of how often she pops up on their feeds. One user asked why she keeps appearing on their fyp when they do not even like her books. Quinn and Jimenez get cited together as authors with an effective presence on the app. Outside romance, Jodi Picoult and Brandon Sanderson also earn frequent mentions.

Users praise each author for different reasons. One user loves Jodi Picoult because she "has a lot to say about the world today and is not afraid to speak on it." Her strong voice and openness set her apart. Sanderson earns his spot through recommendation volume, and one comment listed "All of Brandon Sanderson" as the answer to the question. Quinn and Jimenez get named as a pair whenever users discuss authors who use BookTok well.

A second tier of names comes up too. Lauren Asher appears often because her series keeps resurfacing in recommendations. Navessa Allen has built a strong presence on the platform. Jeneva Rose wins fans with humor, and one user called her silly most of the time. These names show up less than Hoover, but users still bring them up in threads about the best authors on the app.

BookTok also changes sales in ways that matter for authors with older books. The platform can revive backlist titles when engaging videos create new interest in old books. One user suggested an author pitch a memoir with the line "I published this memoir 3 years ago and suddenly sales started picking up again," which beats a plain "here is my book please buy it." That framing works because it tells a story instead of pushing a product.

Authors who want to grow on BookTok should know that authenticity beats polish. People can sense constant marketing, and one user said people do not "want to feel like they are being marketed to all the time." For indie authors, one user with experience recommended micro influencers under 5K followers over large, expensive collaborations. That user had success in that range and believes anyone's video can go viral.

Typically, when BookTok recommendations wear me down, I find they fall into one of two categories - either overhyped books that I ended up being disappointed with or things I’ve already read (looking at you ACOTAR).

But occasionally BookTok gets it right! I’ve been really enjoying {Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Miller}

What was the last book BookTok got right for you?

Does anyone still remember Milo Winter and the Age of Scorpius disaster? He canceled the 2nd edition of the book and now the people who ordered the paperback copies (over 2,100) are due a refund as they were moved to the second edition and it has been canceled. Elrose, his community manager, made a refund queue for all those who "wants a refund" even though it should automatically have been for everyone. Even despite that, no one has commented about getting a refund on his latest TikTok. It's been 4 months now and even if people tried to do chargebacks on their bank the window has expired. I'm making this post to raise awareness and ask if there is anyone waiting for refund and is willing to share their story.

Edit: Forgot to mention that Elrose disabled comments on Patreon and Milo's TikTok bans certain words like "report" and "Tumblr" so people can only politely ask Milo for refunds.

I’m working on a wide scale project at the moment, and have decided to get some learning and writing skills in by writing another paper on the side, this is that.

I’ve read up on articles and watched what’s out there, but I’d like to hear what authors who aren’t publishing entire papers on the issue are thinking and feeling.

I try so hard not to give into booktok because I have been so disappointed in the past when something is overhyped and ends up being terrible.

This doesn’t just refer to the popular recommendations but just generally a recommendation you saw on tiktok and chose to read and ended up loving it.

EDIT: just realized I botched the spelling of recommendations * LMAO I typed the title in panic no one judge me.

Hi there!

I'm a digitally published author (not sharing which works here to avoid self-promo) just getting started with my TikTok, and was curious if anyone has any personal experiences with authors who just really nail it with their TikTok presence? I'd love to review their feeds and get a sense of what works and what doesn't based on community perception. :-)

Thanks so much!

For me, worst:

Fourth wing Acotar One dark window/two twisted crowns Haunting/Hunting Adeline

Best: All of Brandon Sanderson Project Hail Mary

Colleen hoover pls I don’t know why she keeps coming on my fyp, like I don’t even like her books.

RIP Booktok

Worst: ACOTAR, My Husband by Maud Ventura, The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa (unpopular opinion, I know)

Best: Big Swiss by Jen Beagin, Vicious by VE Schwab, The Hour of the Star by Clarice Lispector

Meghan Quinn and Abby Jimenez.

CoHo of course, Lauren Asher, Ana Huang, Penelope Douglas, Ali Hazelwood, Emily Henry

Worst : If he had been with me

Best: Yellowface

I really love Jodi Picoult because she has a lot to say about the world today and is not afraid to speak on it. Her books also explore topics others do not always discuss. Jeneva Rose is really silly most times. I have only read one book, but I truly like her silly personality. Cassandra Thompson/Quill & Crow Publishing House has this whole aesthetic that I love. Aron Beauregard his splatterpunk work is not everyone's cup of tea, but he's out there doing his thing. From a marketing (its what I do) and author (under a pen name) I find I enjoy a variety for different reasons. I may not like the genre someone writes in or their story in general, but I can aprecciate their social media campaigns.

Reach reached out to dozens with a free copy and still no luck. Was anyone here successful?

Elizabeth Wheatley.

Book Goblin is the best and she’s super wholesome and fun.

So, the worst are bad books written by bad authors. Best are good books written by good authors. Good riddance, booktok

I'm more on the alien/monster fucking side of romance booktok as opposed to the het contemporary romance side so for me it's Ruby Dixon, Lillian Lark, Zoey Draven, Kimberley Lemming, Honey Phillips, Ursa Dax, Elle M Drew, CM Nascosta, and their ilk.

Books I heard recommended by a lot of people on my FYP:

- the Poppy War series & Babel by RF Kuang

- Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao

- Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

- This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar

- You've Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi

- the Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

- Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb

Hello! I don’t have a TikTok account but am considering making one specifically to join the BookTok community. Yes, I looked at that sub here, but it was mostly pics of stacks of books people read in a month. I want to know about other authors’ experiences with the platform.

My debut memoir was traditionally published 3 years ago. The sequel is almost ready to query agents (didn’t have an agent for first book). First one has sold about 1,400 copies. My latest royalty statement showed a slight upturn in sales over the last six months, which was encouraging. I’m interested in promoting it as a backlist title on BookTok and also teasing the new book.

I also want to join conversations about other books I’ve read. So…any tips or tales, either cautionary or how-to? Thank you all!

I think BookTok can definitely help but it’s kind of its own world lol.

Biggest thing I noticed is people don’t really want to feel like they are being marketed to all the time.

Also wouldn’t overthink production. Some of the very basic talking to camera videos seem to do better than polished promo videos.

For a backlist book I think you actually have a good angle too. Like “I published this memoir 3 years ago and suddenly sales started picking up again” would probably be more interesting than just “here is my book please buy it”.

And since you have a sequel coming, you could probably slowly start talking about the story behind both books without making every post a sales pitch.

Would probably just make the account and experiment for a month or two. Worst case you hate it and stop

Aside from the obvious Coho😭😭

Just curious who people see in their fyp regularly

Just be yourself. Be honest and friendly. Honesty doesn't have to be rude. If you don't like something, just be kind.

I'm a very I serious person in real life and me talking about my books on TikTok reflect that.

I don't go viral, and I don't do it to make money. I'm just there for a good time.
